Scope and Content Note

The Abraham Dodge Papers include an orderly book, two company books, receipts and pay abstracts from Abraham Dodge's time as Captain of Colonel Moses Little's 12th Continental Regiment. These records include the names of men enrolled in the company, along with lists of firearms, wages, and supplies recorded by Captain Dodge. The orderly book also includes official orders from headquarters, along with brigade and division orders. These records are arranged chronologically.


Biographical Sketch

Abraham Dodge (1740-1786) was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts on August 17, 1740 to William Dodge (1705-1777) and Rebecca Appleton (1706-1794). He was trained by his father as a merchant and engaged in trade in the West Indies until the Battle of Bunker Hill. During the Revolutionary War, he served as Captain in Colonel Moses Little's 12th Continental Regiment. Later, he was promoted to Colonel. He married Abigail Cogswell (d.1781) on April 17, 1762 and together the couple had two children, Abigail and Abraham (b.1765). After Abigail's death, he married Bethiah Staniford (1742-1829) on May 18, 1782 and the couple had two children, Rebecca (b. 1783); and Bethiah (1785-1791). He died in Ipswich on June 16, 1786.
