About this collection

Three different types of collections are represented by these finding aids.  The military collections (MM) include manuscripts for each of the major wars fought by this country and represent many of the volunteer militia from the state of Massachusetts. This is the first time these have been processed.  The maritime collections (MH) provide access to records that chronicle the history of the maritime trade endeavors during the 18th and 19th centuries.  Historic manuscript collections (MSS) represent many of the important families in the history of Essex County, Massachusetts and beyond.

The finding aids displayed here contain a wide variety of materials, including letters, diaries, photographs, drawings, printed material, and legal documents. They have been encoded using Encoded Archival Description (EAD). You may search across all the finding aids on this site. Finding aids are added to this database as they are converted to the EAD format.
